The Worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic is scary for both adults and children.
Anyone watching the news knows how unsettling it is on a daily basis.
During these difficult times it is important to talk with and listen to our children about their fears and concerns. Here are some suggestions that can help you talk with your kids about Coronavirus.
1.
Take their questions and concerns seriously.
Children quickly pick up on our anxiety. Listen carefully to their worries and concerns and answer them as best you can, while reassuring them that you are doing everything you can to keep them healthy and safe.
2.
Explain that the Coronavirus is a new type of illness and we are being very careful by keeping people apart so that less people become sick. It’s very hard for most kids to be away from their friends and schools without being able to prepare for the separation.
3.
Review the importance of good hand washing. (Set a timer for 20 seconds (which seems like a very long time to a small child.) Sing a jingle like, ‘Row Row Row Your Boat.’ Explain how they are washing away the germs and staying healthy by doing this.
4.
Teach them self calming techniques. Good self care such as exercise, meditation and prayer. Relax through enjoyable hobbies such as reading, writing, drawing, video gaming or whatever hobbies your child enjoys.
And most importantly, lead by example, kids do what you do, not what you say. So be mindful of your own self care during these challenging times.
